International ratings by Country on a number of scales, such the Quality of Health Care, Education, Environment and others reveal some interesting and unexpected results. In our geocentric view of the U.S. relative to the world, we often think that we in the U.S. are better off than other countries. But maybe not.

One of these measures is Education and Training. This includes Skills Training for Nonexempt workers. Some of this training just makes sense: workers must learn the technical tasks required by the company. Germany is one country that is often touted as one that provides superior training to its technical personnel.

But what U.S. companies discovered in the 1980’s and 1990’s was that workers lacked mathematics and language skills needed by organizations to function effectively. These deficiencies come as no real surprise, given that math scores in formal testing have been low and trending downward for decades.

Language skills deserves more attention than was true in the past. Why is it so important? Because language skills permit commerce to be transacted easily in the workplace. One language is preferable. But that is not realistic today. Think of the extreme case: everyone speaks a different language. How much business would be transacted?

How are math and language levels today? As you might imagine, the COVID era had a significant negative effect on this education. Students weren’t in the classroom. Teachers were challenged. And students didn’t learn from each other. The dynamics had changed. Students couldn’t serve as role models for their peers. Education is not affected only by teachers. Education occurs from the total classroom experience.

As a result of the decline in Math and Language skills, U.S. companies must develop and offer their own training programs to build these skills in the workforce.

In the article which follows, Cara Hernandez offers a number of ideas that organizations can consider to build the knowledge and skills needed by businesses.
